Living for a living

“What do you do for a living?”  I’ve been asked this question more times than I can count. It’s one of the go to questions to ask someone you are trying to get to know.

I don’t like the question because I don’t think what you do for a living defines who you are as a person. People also shouldn’t be judged based on there career choices.

I try to let people tell me what they do on there own terms and not put them on the spot. I don’t like talking about my day job it’s not my passion and I know that there are many people out there that feel the same.

I’d rather stick to topics about anything they are passionate about whether that’s family, friends, pets, traveling, food, or even there career.

Have you heard the question what do you do for a living? What’s your answer? Let me know in the comments.

  1. This is a very American thing. In our culture, we determine where people fall in our social ranking based on their career. In other places, the first questions asked are where are you from, what family do you belong to, or what football (soccer) team do you follow. I also hate asking what people do for a living; as you say, it doesn’t define me nor does it tell me anything about anyone else. I’d rather know about their hobbies, their interests, what music they listen to, or what they like to do for fun. Those are the things that bind me to the people I find the most interesting and, consequently, are prominent in my life.
