I’m not going to stop being myself to make you feel comfortable

On this journey to becoming the boss of my life I’ve grown so much and I haven’t realized it until things start happening and I see a change in me for the better.

A couple months back I was working at my day job and we had a team lunch. I think it’s a great idea to have time to get to know your coworkers outside of the office. It should be an environment where you’re comfortable enough to really show people your personality.

I’m a straight shooter and I express myself in ways that some people probably don’t like or can understand. So at this lunch when my higher ups asked me questions about customers or different situations I was honest. I didn’t sugar coat it but I made sure they knew it wasn’t me complaining it was just the way it was and I’m fine with that but maybe we can think of ideas to change it.

The day after the team lunch my direct supervisor came into my office and said I just want to give you some feedback which I love constructive criticism.

She explained how the head honcho doesn’t like when we start talking about certain things in a negative way and try to hold back some of my comments for when it’s just us in the office.

First of all, my comments weren’t made to be taken in a negative way they were meant to be taken in eye opening constructive crisitcism type of way. It was intended to try to make our systems better.

Second of all, when you ask me a question or ask for my opinion I’m going to answer it in a direct and honest way. That’s just how my personality is. I don’t care if you’re  the president of the United States I talk to everyone the same way. This is me and how I am I shouldn’t have to sensor myself to make other people feel comfortable.

When I’m in the office and speaking with customers or coworkers I’m professional and good at it. When we are out of the office and getting to know each other on a more personal level my personality is going to show.

It took me almost 30 years to just be myself and not be afraid to be me. I’m not going to change that just because someone doesn’t like it or it makes them sensitive and uncomfortable. I spent most of my life changing my personality to make others happy and I’m not going back to that life.

I have opinions and suggestions that I like to speak up about. Other people have opinions and suggestions also. Weather we agree with the other ones opinions or not it doesn’t give them a right to try to silence you or make you feel bad about them.

I’m going to continue to do me and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made in the last year. If you know someone that wants you to change to make themselves feel comfortable fuck them and do you.

Do you know someone that tries to change you so they can feel comfortable? Let me know in the comments

  1. One of my supervisors is a real stick in the mud. This individual has no sense of humour, and has to be right all the time. They controls situations to make you look bad, while making herself look good. They constantly try to tell me how to speak, how to behave, and how to do my job, even though projects usually come back with requests for changes that I had originally included (but removed at this supervisors request). Every supervisor I’ve had until now has lived my work, and the way I speak professionally, and behave in business settings. I’m really struggling with this individual who keeps trying to change me to fit in her little box.

  2. Yes, my earth Mother. And there were some people who held positions of Authority whom I would challenge when things were everything but working smoothly, and when I spoke up about it, I suddenly became a target for termination. My files were deleted, I was watched unnecessarily, overly criticized, etc. People don’t like when you have a backbone or leadership qualities, especially when you tell the truth and its makes them “look bad.”

    1. Power and titles can get to people’s heads sometimes and they feel they can treat people however they want because they are in a higher up position. Fuck those people, just ignore them and do your best to stay true to yourself.
